When Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536) gave birth to a daughter, Mary, and not a son, to Henry VIII (1491-1547), the king asked from the Pope to annul their marriage. That happened in the year 1516.
The Pope refused to do so, but Henry eventually managed to get a divorce.
Catherine was thrown into prison, deprived of all royal and other rights. She was even forbidden to see her own child for whose life she was constantly praying.
Bearing in mind the hellish nature of her former husband, Catherine of Aragon, until the last day of her life, wrote love letters to Henry asking him to spare their only child.
In 1536, already near death, Catherine sent her last letter to , VIII. She wrote:
"Oculi mei te solum desiderant." (My eyes only for you crave.)
Catherine's daughter Mary, later called "Bloody Mary" eventually became the first was Queen of England, Wales and Ireland.
